The idea of a hotel with the feel of a private home is a rare thing in Spain, but this exceptionally kind aristocrat from Jerez has a great fondness for Britain and the British. And perhaps it was memories of England's country houses which inspired the conversion of his home to a hostelry. It was no rush job: he preferred to spend "an extra year or two" so that every last inch should evoke a mood of privileged intimacy, in keeping with Seville's Moorish architecture. Bedrooms are regal affairs; fabrics, furniture, lighting and bathrooms are all top-notch and the photos of famous forebears, books (Who's Who!) and magazines help create the mood of home-from-home. Three first floor reception rooms give into the patio-bedrooms. The cool and elegant drawing room is a perfect spot for a pre-dinner glass of sherry; it will be from the family's Jerez bodega, of course. In a quiet dining room there are scrambled eggs for breakfast served by one of the hotels two butlers. You are in a quiet Santa Cruz street (you can see the Giralda from the roof terrace). Gonzalo knows all the best places to eat and drink and nearby is a great flamenco bar. An exceptional small hotel.
